چکیده

Stable carbon isotope analysis of fossil tooth enamel carbonate, and oxygen isotope analysis of bone or enamel phosphate, are established tools for palaeodietary and palaeoclimatic reconstruction, respectively. C/C ratios provide evidence of an animal’s diet and phosphate-based O/O values are used to establish palaeotemperature proxies. Recent studies of fossil enamel suggest that biogenic O/O signals are also retained in the carbonate compartment, despite assumptions thatO/O ratios from apatite carbonate are highly susceptible to exchange during fossilization. Here, we re-examine existing enamel carbonate O/O data from the rich fossil assemblages of Swartkrans and Equus Cave. We find patterns that can be interpreted in terms of drinking behaviour, diet, and physiology. In general, herbivores that drink little are more enriched than those that drink frequently, while carnivores are depleted compared with herbivores. Thus, we can increase our knowledge of the ecology of fossil taxa by coupling carbon and oxygen isotope ratio data. ? 1999 Academic Press

Seasonal Cyclicity in Trace Elements and Stable Isotopes of Modern Horse Enamel

The study of stable isotopes in fossil bioapatite has yielded useful results and has shown that bioapatites are able to faithfully record paleo-environmental and paleo-climatic parameters from archeological to geological timescales. In an effort to establish new proxies for the study of bioapatites, intra-tooth records of enamel carbonate stable isotope ratios from a modern horse are compared w...

The Effects of Sample Treatment and Diagenesis on the Isotopic Integrity of Carbonate in Biogenic Hydroxylapatite

The study of the isotopic composition of structural carbonate in fossil vertebrate hydroxylapatite has been hampered by uncertainty concerning sample treatment and arguments about the susceptibility of this material to diagenetic alteration. Our investigation of sample treatment reveals that some methods commonly used to remove organic matter and secondary minerals induce significant isotopic o...

مطالعه کانی‌شناسی اولیه کربنات‌های سازند ایلام و تفکیک مرز این سازند با سازند سروک با استفاده از داده‌های ژئوشیمیایی در تاقدیس پیون، شمال ایذه

The Ilam Formation (Santonian-Campanian) is a unit of Bangestan Group, which is overlain on the Sarvak Formation in Tang E-Rashid area, Peyon Anticline (18.5 Km North of Izeh). Due to similar lithology, recognition of the exact boundary between Ilam and Sarvak Formations in the study area was difficult. Thus it is not possible to determine boundary between these two formations based on petrogra...

Oxygen isotope values in bone carbonate and collagen are consistently offset for New World monkeys.

Stable oxygen isotopes are increasingly used in ecological research. Here, I present oxygen isotope (δ(18)O) values for bone carbonate and collagen from howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata), spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) and capuchins (Cebus capucinus) from three localities in Costa Rica. There are apparent differences in δ(18)Ocarbonate and δ(18)Ocollagen among species. Monkeys from moist fo...

Temperature dependence of oxygen isotope acid fractionation for modern and fossil tooth enamels.

The oxygen isotope ratio of CO(2) liberated from structural carbonate in tooth enamel apatite was measured at phosphoric acid reaction temperatures of 25 degrees C, 60 degrees C and 90 degrees C, and it was found that apparent acid fractionation factors for pristine enamel, fossilized enamel, and calcite follow different temperature relationships. Using sealed vessel reactions normalized to alp...
